Description
The Radon Boats history began back in the early 1960s when avid sportsman and construction worker Ron Radon Sr. moved his family from their native Washington State to Santa Barbara California. After learning to scuba dive, Ron Radon was convinced by his buddies to try commercial abalone diving. Ron started diving the local Santa Barbara waters in a 16' sport fishing boat and soon found he could make a good living doing so. Soon Ron purchased a 20' fiberglass production hull and modified it to better suit commercial use. After the first season, Ron realized the shortcomings of his boat and decided to design something better.
This 24 x 8 Custom Radon boat design was built by H&F Custom Boats (Bandon, OR) in 1973. The heavier built Radons of this era are desirable for their seaworthiness and ability to surf downhill. Right now, the boat is a bare bones "project boat" and could be setup for commercial or sport use. The package includes authentic Radon design, H&F Custom Boats hull construction, I/O engine package, and trailer. If you are looking for an inexpensive entrance into owning a nice Radon, buy this package, do some painting, cleanup, and mechanical work, and you will have a great investment.
Act fast! If this boat doesn't sell as a project boat, it is going to the Radon shop in Santa Barbara to be refit. As we get into the refit, we will continue to market the boat, but the price will go up.
Accommodations: Overnight accommodations are provided for two people in two side-by-side bunks. Cabin layout includes two forward bunks and lockable companionway door. Other cuddy cabin features include access to chain locker, two side windows, fabric covered cushions, carpeted wall coverings, painted wood ceilings, six under-berth storage compartments, wood shelving, teak paper towel holder, teak magazine rack, mounted corner shelf, access to wiring, two overhead florescent lights, two 12-volt lights, and 110-volt outlets.
Galley Equipment: None.
Electronic and Navigational Gear: The helm station is equipped with stainless steel steering wheel, key start ignition, forward/reverse throttle, and various gauges. Electronic and navigational gear includes Course Setter 21R autopilot, AM/FM stereo, and two speakers.
Electrical/Gas/Plumbing: The boat has a 12-volt electrical system. Although the cabin has 110-volt outlets, the 110-volt electrical is not marine standard. Batteries are not included with the boat. Room for batteries is provided in the engine compartment. Other electrical features include accessory panel in cuddy cabin.
Hull and Deck Gear: The hull design is modified vee, suitable for West Coast sea conditions, and enables the boat to stay on a plane and maintain a high speed in both forward sea and following sea conditions. This is the notable design of choice among commercial fisherman from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. Construction materials includes hand-laid fiberglass over moulded fiberglass and marine plywood framing, fiberglass stringers, wood and fiberglass bulkheads, hand-laid fiberglass transom (outdrive bolted through), hand-laid fiberglass over marine plywood decking, and non-skid deck surfacing. Deck layout includes deck at bow, narrow walkaround side decks, large working cockpit, and raised aft deck over engine compartment. The cockpit is equipped with tinted windshield, full instrumentation helm, and standing room for captain and two or three more passengers. Other deck features include four stainless steel foredeck grab bars, three stainless steel deck cleats, radar arch, wash down decks, raised gunwales, and two scuppers. Anchor gear includes stainless steel bow roller and chain locker (no hawse pipe provided). Fishing and sports gear includes two small in-deck fish holds, two swim steps, and stainless steel diver's grab bar.
Equipment/Engine Details: The boat and trailer package includes 1975 "SWANS" dual-axle painted steel trailer. The trailer needs servicing. Trailer features include bow safety chain, hand-crank trailer stand, hand-crank bow winch, bow winch chain, four bunks, and portside carpeted boat guide.
Engine Details: Power package includes 330 HP 454 7.4 liter MerCruiser gas I/O engine. The engine is not the original, but we don't know what year it is. Other engine features include Volvo outdrive, three-blade prop, and built-in fuel tank with approximately 180-gallon capacity. Fuel capacity is a guess/estimate, and tank material is not known. The engine was last run in January 2006. Since that time, the boat has been setting in dry storage with no batteries. Once everything is up and running, the boat will cruise at 20 knots and reach maximum speed of about 30 knots.
One of the safety features of the Radon design is the sealed engine compartment that houses the stern-drive power package. Other engine compartment features include large engine hatch with gel-coat and non-skid surface, stainless steel handle, and shelving for batteries.
Remarks: Don't pass up the opportunity to personalize this project Radon.
