Hey there and welcome to this article on Koi. I have been keeping Koi for over 25 years and now like to spend my time teaching others how to care for Koi as successfully as I have.

It may interest you to know that Koi originated from Asia and Europe. Koi are now found all over the world because of their ability to survive in different water conditions.

From the knowledge I have gained I found out that Koi were first bred as pets in Japan when they noticed that some of the Koi had beautiful patches of colour on them.

It's wonderful to know that in Japan they see Koi as representatives of love and affection. The meaning of Koi in Japan is carp, this is why we call them Koi carp.

I am sure you already know that there are many many different colours of Koi and varieties. However the colours most prominent in Koi are cream, blue, red and yellow.

Those beautiful Koi carp that we can buy today are usually bred by expert breeders and it takes a lot of effort to get those amazing colours. They will usually get a few amazing coloured fish per thousand they breed.

It is interesting to know that Koi are on every continent except Antarctica. But the bad thing about the Koi is that they stir up the ponds which can make the water poisonous and deadly to drink for other animals.

To stop the Koi from killing their live stock in many countries farmers and experts are trying to erradicate Koi from the ponds but due to the Koi being such good survivors they are finding this very hard to do.

It probably wont surprise you to know that wild Koi are very easy targets to predators that will get an easy meal out of them, such as cats, big birds and foxes.

If you have these sorts of animals near where you live then it may be a good idea to cover your pond with a net to stop them being attacked.

The main reason we love Koi apart from their beautiful colours is that they are extremely soothing to watch and can often be very responsive when they know food is around which is very fun to watch them get excited.
